Classic Chesterfield
®
USA is the exclusive distributor of Classic Chesterfield Manufacturing of Melbourne, Australia. We are headquartered in suburban Philadelphia, PA and our warehouse is located in High Point, NC, the furniture capital of the world.
Frames:
Solid Construction – Australian hardwood, which is doweled, glued, corrugated nailed and reinforced in the corners. Not bolted together, but constructed in a single unit like a cage, this results in a strong frame that is virtually indestructible. The platinum frames use a larger timber size.
Suspension:
Sterling level uses a nylon webbing base. The Gold level uses no-sag suspension (zigzag type) with lateral support so the springs remain properly spaced. The Platinum levels uses both zigzag and coil spring suspension depending on the model. The coil spring suspension is a drop-in unit with the springs held in place mechanically with nylon tie-offs; it is NOT 8-way hand tied, which can fail. The coil spring technology is best described as similar to mattress spring technology and has better durability due to the mechanical nature of the hold-downs. Back cushion suspension uses webbing or no-sag, depending on model.
Buttons:
Buttons are double affixed, tied to webbing using nylon cord and then stapled to the frame. They are designed to move with the leather so that they are not stressed.
Leather:
Classic Chesterfield Manufacturing creates the leather technology used in our products, and we have control over the tanning processes due to the clout we have in the Australian leather market. Non-aniline is used for the rubdown antique leathers because aniline is porous and absorbs the materials used in the process. Our rubdown process is performed on the finished unit so it has a true antiqued look. The colored leather is a semi-aniline type of leather. The Australian leather used in our products is much more consistent and has fewer blemishes due to fewer insects such as ticks, and, since the animals run free in the middle of Australia where there are very few people; there is no barbed wire to scar the hides. Our pieces are 100% pure leather with no filler, and, we use large, single hides in the fronts and the high usage areas.
About the Company:
Our factory is a 30,000 square foot facility in Melbourne, Australia and has been in operation since 1977. Some of our employees have been with us for 15 years; we have a minimal employee turnover. The founders are world-renowned furniture designers and we are one of the largest manufacturers of fine leather furniture in Australia. We have developed many leather and construction technologies for ourselves, other manufacturers and tanneries.
